Cone Penetration Testing

Cone Penetration Testing was primarily the expertise of the Dutch, but no longer. Hagstrom provides the complete package including the CPT equipment, tools and a digital CPT data acquisition/measuring system for onshore and near shore in-situ soil investigation. Cone penetration testing is a widely used and an accepted testing method to determine the strength and resilience of the site by providing geotechnical engineering properties of soils and/or delineating the structure or stratigraphy of soil. By completing CPT test before and after ground improvement works, cone penetration test results can be used to determine how much strength a soil has gained after improvement works. Groundwater levels can be monitored with a piezometer which is quickly installed after completion of a CPT. Hagstrom has a fleet of versatile high-performance CPT units and has a track record of almost 23 years.

Mechanical Cone Penetration Testing
  • A system used to determine geotechnical engineering properties soils/delineating soil stratigraphy.
  • A cone is mechanically pushed into the ground between 1.5-2.5 cm
  • Great accuracy, speed of deployment, good continuous sample and cost effective.
Electric Friction Cone Penetration Testing (CPT)
  • A system used to determine geotechnical engineering properties soils/delineating soil stratigraphy.
  • Measurements made during penetration include resistance, side friction and pore water pressure generated (during Piezocone Tests) (CPTU).
Piezocone Testing (CPTU)
  • Used to determine groundwater pressure and measure the excess pore pressure during CPT.
Dissipation Testing
  • Recording the value of pressure against time while CPT test is paused.
  • Results can determine ground permeability and coefficient of consolidation.
  • Can be conducted during a CPTU test.
Seismic Cone Penetrometer Testing
  • Calculating the small strain shear modulus of soil via measuring it’s shear wave velocity.
  • Performed as part of a normal CPT or CPTU test.
  • Aid in determination of soil liquefaction potential and improves interpretation of surface seismic surveys.
Dilatometer Testing (DMT)
  • An in situ technique used in geotechnical investigations.
  • Used to determine the lateral stress and lateral stiffness of soils for engineering purposes.
  • Drilling a steel blade, then expanding a steel membrane into the hole wall using pressurised gas.
Seismic DMT (SDMT)
  • A combination of DMT with a seismic module.
  • The module is a probe outfitted with two sensors which are space 0.5 m.
  • The module measures the shear wave velocity Vs. From Vs enabling it to determine the small strain shear modulus Go.
Piezometer Installation
  • Hagstrom Drilling can install PVC standpipes for water monitoring using our Dual Sampler System;
  • PVC sizes of 20mm up to 50mm; and
  • Plain, slotted or combination of pipe available.
Mostap 35 Soil Sampling
  • Undisturbed soil sampling system which attaches to CPT rods.
  • Uses a thin walled sample tube with catcher and a nylon sock for sample collection.
  • Sample size up to 1.5m and diameter of 60mm.
Mostap 35PS Soil Sampling (Contaminated plunes)
  • CPT test are completed to determine sub subsurface strata.
  • Mostap is connected to standard CPT rods and pushed using hydraulic rams, either directly from surface or to a predetermined depth.
  • The Mostap is cleaned and decontaminated between each test.
  • The soil sample can be stored in the tube for a while until analysed, an important feature in minimising loss of aromatic vapours.
  • Sample length 50mm
Water samples
  • Our CPT units are fitted with a manual pump for water sample retrieval from a standpipe.
  • 12-volt water pump can also be used to target samples at greater depths.
Shear Vane Testing
  • In situ geotechnical testing method.
  • Used to estimate the undrained shear strength of saturated clays without disturbance.
  • Simple, quick and cost effective way of estimating the soils’ shear strength.
Soil Resistivity testing
  • Measure of how much the soil resists the flow of electricity

These services are provided whilst conforming to standards set by International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGe) and Australian Standards AS1289.
