Safety in Drilling Operations

At Hagstrom, the health and safety of our workforce is our top priority.

Our commitment to zero harm and track record of sound operations instils confidence that we will always take the necessary precautions to prevent incidents on site.

In Hagstrom’s 30 years of reverse circulation, diamond, mud rotary and sonic drilling service delivery, ensuring personnel safety has remained the highest priority. We see safety in the mining industry as the combination of well-qualified staff, using well-functioning drill rigs and equipment.

On the people front, Hagstrom seeks to ensure that all staff have the latest Verification of Competencies (VOCs) i.e. the latest appropriate training and support from management. Standards and processes for sound operations are constantly evolving, so keeping our employees up to speed is of critical importance.

On the equipment front, Hagstrom possesses a modern fleet of drill rigs with optimum capability and safety specifications.

We frequently perform scheduled preventative maintenance on our drill rigs to keep them in industry-leading condition, maximising the safety of personnel. To maintain a quality fleet, Hagstrom will additionally evaluate and sell on our older assets to invest in new ones, assuring operational compliance.

Safety Features of our Drill Rigs

Hands-Off-Steel Automation

Automation is changing the way the drilling industry operates its rigs, making work safer for operators and offsiders.

Across the fleet of reverse circulation, diamond, sonic and mud-rotary drills, we continue to aggressively invest in rigs built with hands-free technology. With this new tech, our drillers handle drill rods via remote control rather than on the rig itself, which significantly reduces the risk of physical injuries, especially hand injuries.

OEM Software

We are proud to possess high-quality drill rigs. Our fleet boasts fully integrated OEM software that provides real time reporting on asset integrity utilisation and allows for best practice ops management.

Starlink - The 'Haggy Hub'

One of the biggest safety challenges is the remote nature of drilling work. Historically, our team out on sites have had to rely on sometimes patchy mobile, internet and satellite communications.

Hagstrom is proudly pioneering a new way to communicate between our site teams, Perth office and clients. With the installation of Starlink phased array antennas across our fleet, we leverage the world’s first and largest advanced satellite constellation to ensure seamless 24/7 internet connectivity.

Utilising Starlink enables us to:

  • Activate emergency responses in seconds to keep our team and site safe
  • Monitor our assets in real time to optimise functioning and mitigate risks
  • Monitor and track drilling data at site from headquarters in Perth in real time
  • Run reports to drive efficient and informed decision making based on accurate data
  • Stop work when they believe an unsafe work condition exists

Mental Health and Wellbeing

We understand the psychological impact that loneliness and isolation at work can have on our personnel, which is why we have measures in place to ensure all our staff feel positive and supported. Informally dubbed ‘The Haggy Hub’, the newly deployed Starlink enables our people to know they are not alone out there and allows them to communicate with loved ones at home with ease.

We also create a culture of positivity, success and inclusion through our Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) and reward and recognition initiatives. One of our defining characteristics is our high morale, which our clients see and appreciate at every stage of their interaction with Hagstrom.

Capability Training, Licenses and In-Services

We attribute a large portion of our overall success as a company to the significance we place on safety.  Our commitment to safety has allowed us to effectively manage the risks inherent in our industry, provide a safe, sensible, and productive work environment and consistently prevent injuries as well as control costs.

A keystone of our success is the investment we make in the training and competency of our personnel.

At Hagstrom, we ensure that all personnel have the right training, qualifications and attitudes to safety; that qualifies them to competently perform tasks whether out in the field or in our workshops. HSE training is a standard process in Hagstrom’s onboarding procedures. Knowledge and recognition of safety hazards empowers our workers to make considered decisions.

We establish and enforce safe work procedures and we encourage our employees to “always engage and think” about safety as they go about their day. We also disseminate lessons learned from every incident or near-miss to help others stay safe.

Our training program provides our workers with the ability to:

1. Proactively identify hazards
2. Evaluate the hazards for each job task they perform
3. Properly control the hazards
4. Respond appropriately to incidents should the need arise
5. Stop work when they believe or perceive an unsafe work condition exists

Qualifications

At Hagstrom, we have all the necessary ISO qualifications to drill safely across all our site including four ISO standards. Our ISO certification demonstrate the high standard of operations that underpin the Hagstrom way.
